The complete guide to NIBRS criminal justice reporting

Since January 1, 2021, all law enforcement agencies in the United States have been required to submit data in compliance with the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). NIBRS gathers 57 separate data elements on criminal acts ranging from arson to weapons offenses. NIBRS has many benefits, such as:

  • NIBRS makes sharing crime data with the community much easier and more transparent.

  • NIBRS data is used by the federal government to determine which jurisdictions are eligible for grant funds and in what amounts.

  • NIBRS data is also utilized by programs such as CompStat and Problem-Oriented Policing (POP), which are designed to empower police departments to analyze and act on crime statistics.
